Types of CFLs

  • Spiral

Many Vermonters recognize CFLs by their signature twisty shape – just like a creemee. Spiral CFLs are very versatile and can fit a wide range of fixtures – just about anywhere you used to use a traditional incandescent bulb. Spiral CFLs are great for the lights you use a lot, and will save you money and give you quality light in any fixture.

  • Candelabra

You might not think a CFL is the right choice for a decorative light fixture, but candelabra CFLs are perfect for chandeliers, ceiling fans, wall sconces, covered outdoor lights, and other fixtures where you can see the bulb. Their slim shape also makes them just right for narrow fixtures where a bigger bulb won't fit.

  • Globe

Globe-shaped CFLs can replace incandescent bulbs in bathroom vanities and ceiling pendants. Like other encapsulated CFLs, globes can take a few seconds to reach full brightness. Once they're warmed up, they provide the same amount of light as an incandescent bulb, but use much less energy.

  • Reflector

Energy-efficient reflector CFLs are perfect for places like recessed ceiling fixtures because they spread light out wider and more evenly while using just one-third the energy of traditional light bulbs. Plus, because CFLs last longer than incandescents, you'll save yourself a lot of trips up the ladder. Reflector CFLs also work well indoors in track lighting fixtures, as well as in outdoor fixtures.

Note: Make sure the bulbs you use in recessed fixtures are labeled "suitable for use in enclosed fixtures," and bulbs you use in outdoor fixtures are labeled "damp location approved"

  • Post

Post CFLs are a good choice for outdoor fixtures like porch lamps and driveway lights because they're specially made to withstand outdoor conditions. Check the package for compatibility with timers and photocells.

  • A-style

A-style CFLs are the same as spiral CFLs, but are encapsulated to have the same look of traditional incandescent bulbs. They can be used anywhere you'd use traditional light bulbs, even with clip-on lampshades that don't work with spiral CFLs. Like other encapsulated CFLs, they can take a few seconds to reach full brightness.

  • Three-way

CFLs can work in three-way lamps. Check the package to make sure your new CFL will work in a three-way lamp. A regular CFL can be used in a three-way lamp, but you will only get light in the middle of the three ‘on’ positions.
